British Science Week 2025

March 12, 2025 by rebeccaaspinall

British Science Week is taking place between 7-16 March 2025.

This year’s theme explores change and adaptation, which is all around us and affects every area of STEM.

For example, animals and plants change and adapt to their surroundings to survive.

We’ve also seen technology constantly evolving which can help people in many different aspects of their lives – from finding new medical treatments to learning in the classroom.

And it doesn’t just happen here on Earth, even the stars and social system changes too. Perhaps there is life on other planets that also adapts as their environment changes?

This year in school we celebrated by having a morning of teacher swap! Each class had a visit from a different class teacher. Teachers had planned an exciting morning of practical activities all based on this years theme of Change and Adapt.

Class 1 with Mrs Edwards

LET’S MAKE A PAPER CHAIN CATERPILLAR Class 1 children made a fun caterpillar, then changed it into a butterfly! By using different coloured paper, the children learnt about metamorphosis and the colours of the rainbow.

Class 2 with Mr Graham

BE SEEN BE SAFE This activity encouraged class 2 to think about reflection and light. They tested different materials to see how reflective they were, and decided which ones would be best to change into to keep themselves seen and safe in the dark!

Class 3 with Mrs Aspinall

LET’S MAKE A WORMERY Worms make good soil which is very important in nature. Class 3 investigated how worms change dead leaves and waste materials into soil. Class 3 are excited to continue to observe the changes!

Class 4 with Mrs Morton

SHOULD WE FLUSH IT AWAY? Class 4 had lots of fun investigating which items change and breakdown easily in water so that they can be flushed away. They were shocked to find that items like wet wipes do not breakdown in water so when they are flushed down the toilet they mix with grease in the sewer and form massive solids called fatbergs.

Class 5 with Miss Grimes

DISSOLVING DILEMMA In this activity class 5 used various types of sugar to investigate whether changing the size of the grains/lumps has an impact on the speed they dissolve in water. For a fair test, they made sure you keep everything else the same and measure the ingredients carefully.
