
Week 4 Highlights…
UNCRC Article 24: Every child has the right to the best possible health.
Weโve had another fantastic week of learning in EYFS!
We began the week with a very special event as our families joined us in school to celebrate the end of our Ready, Set, Go programme with Coach Chris. Over the past 10 weeks, the children have worked incredibly hard and it was wonderful to see so many of you taking part with them. Each child was proudly presented with a mini pack and certificate to recognise their brilliant effort and participation.
In Literacy, the children have been busy creating their own magical stories. They stepped into the role of a character they designed themselves and acted out their simple storylines. We focused on using expressive voices and facial expressions to show how our characters were feeling and what they were doing.
In Numeracy, we explored written number symbols and what they mean. The children enjoyed experimenting with their own number sentences and sharing their ideas with confidence.
In RE, we have begun to learn about the Easter story and why it is such an important celebration for Christians all around the world.
To end the week, we wore our favourite hats to raise awareness for the amazing work carried out by Brain Tumour Research. The children looked fantastic and it sparked some thoughtful conversations about helping others across the UK.









Week 3 Highlights…

Weโve had a lovely, busy week in EYFS!
In Maths, the children have been finding the missing number in different number sequences. They have been super detectives, spotting patterns and working out what comes next.
In Literacy, we have been creating our own fairy, goblin, and troll characters to use in our stories. The children have shown fantastic imagination and creativity!
We also had a wonderful day on our balance bikes, learning how to balance and control them all by ourselves. Some children even progressed onto pedals โ we are so proud!
To finish the week, we raised money for Comic Relief by โtaking ourselves silly.โ We had so much fun taking part in a wacky race on the school field with the Sports Leaders โ lots of laughter all round!









Week 2 Highlights…

This week, we have had lots of fun in Literacy creating settings for enchanted woodlands and all things magical. The children have been wonderful at using their imaginations to bring these stories to life!
In Maths, we have been working on adding and subtracting two groups and learning what the mathematical symbols + and โ mean. The children are becoming much more confident in using them.
We also enjoyed a fantastic Forest School session, where we made beautiful fairy crowns and ended the afternoon with a fire and some yummy marshmallows.
I hope you all have a wonderful Motherโs Day weekend. It has been so lovely to hear the children talk about how much they love and admire you all.








Week 1 Highlights…

What a wonderful, fun-filled week weโve had in EYFS!
We began the week with our exciting Bear Hunt at Maiden Castle. The children had such a fantastic time retelling Weโre Going on a Bear Hunt, bringing the story to life through sports, dance, and a range of outdoor adventure activities. Their enthusiasm and imagination shone through every step of the way!
We also celebrated World Book Day, a brilliant opportunity to spark and nurture a lifelong love of reading. As this year marks the National Year for Reading, we are working hard to help every child find that special sparkโdiscovering stories, characters, and genres that truly inspire them. Throughout the day, the children enjoyed a range of book-themed activities and finished with an amazing quiz that showed off their growing knowledge and excitement for books.
This week, we are also assessing the childrenโs phonics skills and will soon be regrouping to support those who have made speedy progress. Please continue to read the green words cards as often as possible and revisit speed sounds regularly at homeโevery little bit makes a big difference!







Welcome Back to Spring 2!

I hope you all had a lovely break and are feeling refreshed for the exciting half-term ahead. The children have been busy sharing their ideas and together they have chosen a magical new topic for Spring 2: โEnchanted Forests.โ
Over the next few weeks, weโll be stepping into a world filled with fairies, mystical creatures, woodland magic, and endless imagination. The children will explore stories, create their own forest-inspired art, investigate natural materials and enjoy lots of hands-on learning linked to this enchanting theme.
Itโs set to be a half-term full of wonder, creativity, and plenty of fun! I canโt wait to see where the childrenโs curiosity and ideas take us.

Week 7 Highlights…
UNCRC Article 14 (freedom of thought, conscience and religion).
Weโve had a fantastic last week of the Spring 1 term in EYFS, full of learning, celebrations, and fun!
In Maths, the children have been exploring the properties of 2D shapes. They impressed us with how confidently they could name and sort shapes by counting their sides and corners.
In Literacy, we created our very own jungle fact files, using information from our nonโfiction texts about animals living in the jungle and rainforest. The children enjoyed discovering new facts and sharing them with their friends.
We have also had several special celebrations this week. To mark the start of Lent, we enjoyed a sweet treat on Shrove Tuesday as part of the Christian celebration of Pancake Day.
Later in the week, we celebrated Chinese New Yearโthe Year of the Horseโwith crafts and a delicious Chinese foodโtasting session. The children showed great curiosity and enthusiasm as they learned about these traditions.
Finally, we rounded off the week with the Spring Disco, where the children had lots of fun dancing and spending time with their friends.

Week 6 Highlights…

Weโve had a wonderful and busy week of learning in Class 1!
In Literacy, the children have been creating silly sentences inspired by our story of the week, Bear on a Bike. The jungle animals have given us lots of opportunities for fun, imagination and laughter, while also supporting the children in verbally constructing sentences and beginning to write them with increasing confidence.
In Numeracy, we have continued exploring odd and even numbers. The children are growing in confidence with this concept and have worked incredibly hard to sort, identify and explain their thinking.
As part of Women in Science Week, our Science learning focused on inspirational women who have shaped the scientific world. This week we learned about Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and the children were fascinated by her achievements and bravery.
Today we also took part in History Day, where Class 1 travelled back in time to experience what life might have been like as an evacuee. The children engaged brilliantly with the activities and showed great curiosity and empathy.

Childrenโs Mental Health Week 2026 โ โThis Is My Happy Placeโ

As part of Childrenโs Mental Health Week, the children explored this yearโs theme, โThis Is My Happy Place,โ by reflecting on the people, places, and experiences that help them feel safe, connected, and valued. We focused on the idea of belongingโunderstanding where we feel we fit and what supports our wellbeing.
The children in Class 1 created their own personal belonging maps, choosing to include places, groups, activities, or even nonโphysical spaces โ such as feelings, memories, or moments โ where they feel most at ease. This activity encouraged them to recognise what contributes to their happiness and emotional security, while celebrating the uniqueness of everyoneโs happy place.
Week 5 Highlights…
UNCRC Article 17: Every Child has the right to media as long as it is safe.
This week we have been focusing on EโSafety Week and really enjoyed learning about AI and how to use it safely. It was lovely to see so many of you at our coffee morning, which was a great success and lots of fun for everyone.
In Maths, we have been exploring odd and even numbers. We found this a little tricky, but the children have been working hard and are beginning to identify these numbers with growing confidence.
In Literacy, as part of National Storytelling Week, we have been on an exciting jungle adventure. The children have loved creating and telling their own adventures, sharing their stories with friends both in class and across the school.

National Storytelling Week 2026

This week, we are delighted to be celebrating National Storytelling Week 2026 in school. Storytelling plays a vital role in developing childrenโs imagination, language skills and love of reading, and the children have been enthusiastically taking part in a range of creative activities linked to stories.
As part of our Go All In Reading Campaign 2026, all classes have enjoyed Music for My Story workshops. These sessions encouraged children to explore how music can bring stories to life, helping them to express characters, settings and emotions in new and exciting ways. The workshops supported children to deepen their understanding of stories while building confidence, creativity and enjoyment.
We are proud of the childrenโs engagement and enthusiasm throughout the week and thank you for your continued support in encouraging reading and storytelling at home.



Week 4 Highlights…

Weโve had another busy and exciting week in EYFS, filled with hands on learning and new experiences!
As part of our learning about different religions and their places of worship, we visited a synagogue. The children were wonderfully curious and respectful as they explored the Jewish place of worship. We enjoyed talking about the similarities and differences between Judaism and Christianity and the children asked fantastic questions. It was lovely to see them making connections to what they already know.
In Music, the children have been working with chime bars, learning how to play them at different speeds. We practised making the tempo fast and slow, and the children showed great control and focus. It has been a joy watching them experiment with sound and rhythm.
As part of our Literacy, the children have been organising the characters from โMonkey Puzzleโ into those who appear at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. This has helped develop their sequencing skills and their understanding of how stories are structured.
In PE, weโve continued practising rolling a ball towards a target. The children are really improving their accuracy, control, and coordination. We have so many children who are well on their way to becoming bowling superstars!






Week 3 Highlights…

We have had a truly wonderful week in EYFS, filled with exciting learning and lots of smiles!
In Maths, we have moved on to addition and subtraction. The children have been busy adding objects to a group and taking them away to find the answersโlots of great practical problemโsolving happening!
In Literacy, we have been enjoying the story Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson. The children have been describing the characters both verbally and in writing, using fantastic vocabulary and imagination.
During Forest School, the children created their very own magical fairy wands. They had a fantastic time exploring the outdoors and using natural materials to make something truly special.
In RE, we have been learning about where Jewish people worship and comparing this with Christian worship in a church. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed lovely curiosity and respect.
We are also very excited for our visit to the synagogue in Newcastle on Monday. The children are really looking forward to exploring a real place of worship and seeing some of the things weโve been learning about in class.






Week 2 Highlights…

This week, we started our Spring Term Forest School sessions. The children were fantastic at exploring the outdoor environment, following safety rules and working together. Over the coming weeks, we will be gradually building up skills and confidence in preparation for cooking sessions on the fire, which the children are already very excited about.
We took part in a brilliant 5 Senses Workshop led by our school caterers. It was so much fun exploring and trying different foods using all of our senses โ sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. The children showed wonderful curiosity and bravery, with many trying new foods and talking about the textures, smells and flavours they noticed.
In Literacy, the children have been using their imaginations to create their own jungle animals. We brought our creations to life by describing them using spoken vocabulary, talking about what our animals look like, how they move and the sounds they make.
In Maths, we have been ordering numbers up to 6 and practising counting forwards and backwards, counting carefully 1 by 1. The children have worked hard to match numbers to amounts and are becoming more confident in their understanding of early number concepts.









Welcome Back to Spring 1!

The children in EYFS, have returned full of enthusiasm and have chosen a fantastic new topic for this half-term: โDown in the Jungleโ. This theme will take us on an adventure exploring jungle animals, habitats, and the wonders of the rainforest through creative activities, stories, and hands-on learning experiences.
We are also thrilled to announce a new addition to our timetable: PE every Monday morning with Chris from the Ready Set Go team! This will give the children a brilliant opportunity to develop their physical skills, teamwork, and confidence in a fun and active way.

Our school disco was full of festive cheer as the children had an amazing time rocking around the Christmas tree! The excitement didnโt stop thereโa very special visitor surprised every child with a selection box, making the evening even more magical.

This week, our entire school community came together for our magical Christingle service at our local church. Surrounded by family and friends, the children celebrated this special tradition with songs, prayers and the beautiful glow of Christingle candles.
It was a truly heartwarming occasion that reminded us of the importance of togetherness, hope, and light during the festive season. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event so memorable!



๐Christmas Jumper Day & Christmas Dinner Celebration 2025
Today was a truly magical day at Nettlesworth Primary! Our children lit up the school in their colourful Christmas jumpers, spreading joy and festive cheer throughout the dinner hall.
Sarah and Lisa made sure our stomachs were just as happy as our hearts, serving up a delicious Christmas dinner that everyone enjoyed. From laughter and smiles to tasty treats, it was a wonderful day filled with happiness and togetherness.
Adding to the excitement, Santa delivered a special letter to every child, bringing even more festive magic to the day. The joy on their faces was priceless as they opened their letters and shared their Christmas wishes!

This week, our mischievous visitors have taken over the school, spreading mayhem and giggles everywhere! From cheeky pranks to playful surprises, the elves are certainly keeping us on our toes.

๐Christmas Counts Nativity 2025
What a truly magical nativity performance! The children shone brightly on stage, sharing the Christmas story with confidence, joy, and festive spirit. We are so proud of their hard work and teamwork โ it was a wonderful celebration to remember!

What a busy and exciting two weeks weโve had at school! Hereโs a quick look at what weโve been up to:
- We took part in UK Parliamentary Week, learning about democracy and how decisions are made.
- Our Christmas tree was delivered, and every child and staff member added a bauble to mark the start of December โ a lovely tradition!
- We enjoyed a fantastic pantomime performance right here in school โ it was full of laughter and festive fun.
- In Understanding the World, we began exploring maps of our local area, helping children learn more about where we live.
- Finally, our Christmas Craft Fayre was a great success, bringing the community together and raising funds for the school.

Week 3 Highlights…

This week began with the children wearing purple for World Prematurity Day.
Monday also marked the beginning of Safeguarding Week 2025 – the theme was prevention before it’s too late.
In Maths, the children have been learning to find 1 more and 1 less than a number, both verbally and using different classroom objects โ theyโve really enjoyed the challenge!
The snow arrived at the perfect time for our Science work on seasonal changes. The children loved exploring the natural world and noticing how Autumn is changing into Winter.
In Literacy, we began our new story, “Whatever Next” -they had some great discussions about their favourite characters and parts of the story.
In Art, things got wonderfully messy as we created our own planets using shaving foam, paint, and glitter โ the results were amazing!

We took part in our first Remembrance Service and worked hard to create a beautiful art gallery to honour the soldiers and animals who bravely went to war to protect our country. The children showed such care and respect during this activity.

Odd Socks Day kicked off Anti-Bullying Week, helping us talk about kindness and celebrating what makes us all unique.

Our offsite Forest School sessions began at our woodland location. The children loved exploring nature and learning outdoors.

To finish the week, we took part in the Pudsey Run and raised an incredible ยฃ3,673.80 for Children in Need across the UK. Thank you for your amazing support!















World Nursery Rhyme Week 2025

Nursery rhymes play a vital role in early childhood development. They help children with:

Welcome Back to Autumn 2!

This week, we have excitedly chosen our new topic: Space!
Our learning and role play area will be transforming into an out-of-this-world experience, filled with stars, planets, and plenty of imagination.
Weโve also been learning about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot, exploring the story behind Bonfire Night. In PE, weโve started gymnastics every Tuesday with Mr Beveridge and the children have been brilliant at trying new movements and building their confidence.
A highlight of our week was a visit from real-life author Adam Bushnell, who inspired us to create our own space-themed stories, characters, and settings. The children were so engaged and creativeโit was a joy to see! We had a special visit from his four legged friend – Jet the tortoise who climbed aboard our rocket ship to the moon too!

As we come to the end of our first term in Reception, I want to take a moment to share just how proud we are of your wonderful children. Their transition into school life has been truly impressive โ theyโve embraced new routines, built friendships and shown such enthusiasm for learning. Itโs been a joy to watch them grow in confidence and curiosity each day.โญ๏ธ
A special highlight this term was their very first Harvest Festival performance in church. They sang and danced beautifully โ it was a moment that truly reflected how far theyโve come already. ๐๐

Week 7 Highlights…

Weโve been working really hard learning the first of our Set 1 sounds in phonics. The children are doing brilliantly, and weโre so grateful for all the support youโre giving them at home โ it really makes a difference!
This week, we began our exciting journey through Ten Town! The children are already getting to know the number characters and how to form their numerals correctly. Look out for their Ten Town books coming home on Monday โ theyโll love sharing the characters and their number stories with you!
In science, weโve been exploring how weโve changed from when we were babies to now, at 4 and 5 years old. The children had some lovely discussions and enjoyed sharing their own experiences.
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, we created beautiful rainbow hearts and learned about Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, the inspiring founder of UK Black Pride. The children showed great curiosity and respect as we talked about diversity and inclusion.
A big highlight this week was our Flavours of the Farm experience! We worked with the wonderful Chartwells kitchen team to learn all about how food travels from farm to plate. The children explored different fruits and vegetables, discovered where they come from, and even had the chance to taste some delicious, healthy dishes. It was a fantastic hands-on learning opportunity that really brought our food topic to life!

What a great week we’ve had in EYFS! โญ๏ธ
We began by creating beautiful family portraits, celebrating the uniqueness of every family. The children shared lovely thoughts about how families may look different, but what truly matters is the love we share โ and that makes every family precious. ๐ฅฐ
In numeracy, we started exploring subitising โ recognising small quantities without counting โ and the children have been brilliant at spotting numbers in fun and playful ways. ๐ข
In literacy, we worked on sequencing simple stories, helping the children understand how events unfold in order. Itโs been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they retell familiar tales. ๐
We also embraced the changing season with an autumn hunt, observing the signs of seasonal change in our environment. The children were so curious and excited to spot crunchy leaves, conkers, and the colours of autumn all around us. ๐
To end the week, we marked World Mental Health Day with a special day of calm and happiness. We focused on mindfulness, kindness, and what makes us feel happy and safe โ a lovely way to reflect and recharge.












Week 5 Highlights…

Weโve had a fantastic in EYFS, full of learning, creativity, and discovery! We have now successfully completed the statutory baseline assessments. The children approached the activities with enthusiasm and curiosity โ well done to them all!
In PSHCE & Art, weโve been exploring what makes us special and unique. The children enjoyed painting self-portraits and talking about their individual qualities, likes, and interests. Itโs been a lovely way to celebrate our differences and build confidence.
In Literacy, weโve been focusing on identifying and writing our names. The children have been practising their letter formation and recognising the letters in their names โ a brilliant start to their writing journey!
In Numeracy, weโve been counting objects from a group, developing our number recognition and counting skills through hands-on activities and games.
Weโve also begun learning about significant individuals throughout history who have helped shape the world. The children are already showing great interest and asking thoughtful questions!









Week 4 Highlights…

This week marked the exciting start of Autumn! We made our own Autumn Trees to display around our classroom to celebrate our Understanding of the Natural World.
After carefully assessing all the children, weโve begun our Read Write Inc. phonics journey and the children are already showing great enthusiasm and curiosity as they begin to explore sounds and letters.
Weโve also continued with the statutory Reception Baseline Assessment, which is a lovely opportunity for us to get to know each childโs starting points in a relaxed and supportive way. This will help us tailor our teaching to meet their individual needs.
As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, weโve been learning all about where some of our food comes from and how choosing Fairtrade products can help farmers and communities around the world. The children have really enjoyed exploring different products and asking thoughtful questions. We baked some delicious Fairtrade banana biscuits too!
To end the week, we were thrilled to welcome many of you to our very first Macmillan Coffee Morning. It was a lovely opportunity to come together as a school community and raise money for a very important cause. Thank you so much for your support and generosity.










Week 3 Highlights…

Weโve had a fantastic third week in EYFS, full of learning, laughter, and new experiences!
๐งฎ In Maths, the children have been exploring colours, shapes and positional language through fun, hands-on activities. Itโs been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they describe where things are and identify different shapes around them.
๐ In Literacy, weโve enjoyed reading stories about some very cheeky seagulls who pinched the Lighthouse Keeperโs Lunch! The children loved joining in with the storytelling and talking about what might happen next.
๐ถ In Music, we began playing instruments and learning how to keep in time with the beat. The children showed great enthusiasm and rhythm โ future musicians in the making!
๐ And to finish the week, we proudly took part in Jeans for Genes Day, wearing denim and raising awareness for a great cause. Pupils and staff proudly wore their jeans to raise awareness and funds for children affected by genetic disorders. From classroom discussions to creative activities, our children learned about the importance of inclusion and compassion โ all while helping to make a difference. A huge thank you to our amazing families for your support and generosity.
Weโre so proud of how well the children are settling in and canโt wait for more exciting learning next week.

Welcome to the start of a very exciting journey in Reception! ๐
I am absolutely delighted to have your little one join us and want to thank you for your trust and support as we begin this important new chapter together.
Today marks the beginning of many new friendships, discoveries and joyful learning experiences. I understand this first day may be filled with a mix of emotions for both you and your child, and please rest assured that we are here to support every step of the way.
My focus this week will be on helping the children settle in, feel safe, and become familiar with their new environment. There will be plenty of time for play, exploration, and getting to know each other.
All of the children have had a wonderful first day at school, I am very proud of them ๐
Our first topic this year is; โMarvellous Meโ! This exciting topic is all about helping children learn more about themselves and each other as they settle into Reception.
Throughout this half term, we will be exploring:
๐ง Who we are โ our names, families, likes and dislikes
๐ Our bodies โ naming body parts and learning about our five senses
๐ง Our feelings โ recognising and talking about emotions
๐ซ Friendships โ learning how to play, share and take turns
๐ก Our homes and communities โ what makes us unique and where we belong.
We will share stories, songs, art, and activities that help build confidence, support personal and social development, and celebrate what makes each of us special.
