Today we had the best Sports Day in such a long time! It was amazing being able to welcome back all of our families to watch us in our annual Sports Day.

The children took part in a range of races designed and planned by our SSOCs and Sports Leaders. They worked so had in the weeks leading up to the event to make it possible.

A massive thank you to our children who make this event the happy occasion that it is. Once again we saw our Rights Respecting behaviour and ethos throughout the day.

 

We are pleased to announce that RED TEAM have kept their crown for a second year in a row! Well done Red’s!

 

We had so much fun when Alexis and Ella visited us to teach us all about minibeasts in our school grounds. We enjoyed hunting for bugs and comparing them on a checklist. We used equipment to look carefully at the bugs we found. We then released them back in to their habitats. Finally we planted flowers to take home. We had such a lovely day and learnt so much!

UNCRC Article 31 – leisure, play and culture

What a wonderful treat we had today when we welcomed the Durham Music Services Brass Band into school. We were introduced to a variety of instruments including: French Horn; Cornet; Trumpet…and we’re given a demonstration as to how they sounded individually and part of an entire band.

We all believe that our children have been inspired by the musicians and we could have future career prospects in the making.

Once again, outstanding rights respecting gold ethos by all our children and staff – a truly wonderful afternoon. Well done everyone.

Today the children had a visit from the amazing poet and author (and totally awesome ukulelist); Paul Cookson. He delivered an amazing workshop to the whole school with some hilarious poems! The children (and the staff!) loved taking part in the actions and words. There was so much laughter and love for poetry created at Nettlesworth today!

After the assembly, each class had the chance to take part in a workshop with Him, linking to our new cornerstones topics. With some of his creative help, we began to make our own poems and wow they are all fantastic! Well done everyone and thanks you Paul 🪕📖

Class 1 – Where are the best places to play in our community?

As part of National Fieldwork week, we decided to look around our local community to find the safest and most enjoyable place to play in our village. We put the question to the children and they wrote a list of 4 places that they thought would be good to explore; Nettlesworth Park, The Community Centre, The Forest & Kimblesworth Park.

We used a large map to navigate our way around the village to the different places we suggested and when we got back to school we recorded our opinions in a pictograms, tally chart and bar chart. The pace with the most votes (11) was Kimblesworth Park and here are some of the reasons why:

* It has a big fence around it and a gate so we are safe when playing,

* This park isn’t near a busy road,

* It’s got lots of things to play on and a basketball court and a big field for picnics,

* It has bins and not much litter on the floor.

Class 2 – Walk to Waldridge Fell

We all had so much fun walking over the fell as part of our National Fieldwork week work. We looked at all of the natural and man made things that we could see. We loved looking at the school from afar and also spotted lots of houses. We enjoyed spending 10 minutes stilling and using all of our senses to explore the world around us.

Class 3 – Treasure hunt…

Class 3 had a fun geography lesson this week, for National Fieldwork Week. We created our very own treasure maps, adding all of the features we have been covering across the year and a route for our partners to follow. We then went outside and challenged our friends to find our hidden treasure, marked on our maps. We all managed to find each others treasure and were able to accurately use the maps and follow the routes.

UNCRC Article 14 – freedom of thought, belief and religion

Another lovely assembly today when we welcomed Reverent Caroline into school who read the story of Moses. Fabulous rights respecting gold ethos demonstrated by all our children again: especially our actors.

UNCRC Article 30 – customs and religion

What an unbelievable treat we had today when our rights respecting council delivered an assembly in celebration to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Well done to Amelia and Maisie who played the National Anthem on their violin.

UNCRC Article 31: Every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts.

To celebrate 70 years of our wonderful; Queen Elizabeth II, we hosted a picnic with the whole school and their families this afternoon. In true British weather style the weather was wet and then broke out onto glorious sunshine. Despite this the afternoon was filled with laughter, dancing and eating soggy sandwiches!

Thank you to everyone who came along and made the day a huge success – it was great to share such an important event with the whole community ! 🇬🇧
