Remembrance Day Service 2022

November 11, 2022 by admin

UNCRC Article 38 – war and armed conflicts

“Lest we Forget”

Across the week all of the children in school have been learning about the importance of Remembrance Day. Today we held our annual Remembrance Day Service in the school hall, we talked about the importance of the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month and why we wear poppies on this day to remember those that gave their lives to make the world a better place for us before holding a minutes silence to pay our respect.

We made our own poppy Art in classes to display at the front of the school:

Class 1

We watched this video from CBBC and CBeebies who broadcast this 2 minute animation called “Poppies”, showing war from the animals’ points of view. We also created our own handprint poppies which has so much fun! We were very proud of our friend Joel, who kindly brought in lots of his dad’s medals, photos and memorabilia from the Afghanistan war from when he was a soldier there.

Class 2

In class 2 we discussed how we all have family ties to experiences during war times. We all shared our thoughts about our families in the past. We then used a range of materials to create a Flanders field poppy painting. We have proudly displayed them at the front of the school. We have also enjoyed joining in with the whole school by buying our poppy merchandise, helping raise money for the poppy appeal.

Class 3

Class 3 had lots of fun creating their water-colour poppy paintings. We discussed each part of the poppy and why it is meaningful and talked about why it is important to wear them. We reflected on the importance of Remembrance Day and thought about the soldiers who fought for our country. We enjoyed participating in the whole school remembrance service putting our change on the poppy.

Class 4

For Remembrance Day, Class 4 made their own origami poppies to display at the front of our school and even made some poppies during Forest School using natural resources. We also donated our spare change to the giant poppy in our Remembrance Assembly led by Mrs Lee and were able to look at photographs and medals that Joel from Class 1’s dad had been rewarded with for defending our country. A massive thank you to Joel and his dad for letting us see part of our history!

Class 5

Class 5 created a beautiful landscape using intricate colour-mixing, charcoal and silhouettes  to produce a poppy field showing a lone soldier standing alongside a grave, remembering fallen soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom of mankind. We linked our artwork to John McCrae’s famous poem – Flander’s Fields. Lest We Forget.
