Speaking and Listening
In our Literacy session today, we discussed how we felt about the current affects of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. We looked at pictures in our groups, discussed our feelings with confidence and created a thought shower of post it notes on the flipchart to further discuss.

OASES visit
Today, we were visited by OASES who helped us look at the wildlife of our local area, explained how we can help and even took our views on what we’d like to see more of in nature in Durham. We loved taking part in the ‘guess the wildlife’ quiz, too!

Creating circuits in Science
Our new topic in Science is ‘Electricity’. We began to investigate complete and incomplete circuits, discussing which components to use and even how to create our own circuit diagrams using scientific symbols.

To celebrate our new Cornerstones topic of ‘Blue Abyss’, we painted our very own sea scenes! We used a range of watercolours, stencils, pencils, felt tip pens, gel pens, glitter and even sand to bring our creations to life – take a look!

Cornerstones Celebration
To celebrate the end of our topic ‘Invasion’, we held our very own gameshow! We worked in our tables as teams to answer the various History and Geography rounds of invasion questions and had so much fun doing so. We even had our own theme song!

Photographing our archaeological evidence
In our Computing session, we set the scene of finding our evidence in the ‘ground’ and taking photos on the iPads or our Anglo-Saxon grave markers. What a find!

Yellow Submarine
In Music this term, we have been looking at The Beatles, their music and their legacy. We have listened to and appraised lots of their songs and decided to learn how to sing and play along to Yellow Submarine. On our last Music lesson of this half term, Mrs Edwards brought her guitar in and we played various instruments, such as tambourines or maracas, along to this legendary song.

Creating Anglo-Saxon grave markers
In DT, we used clay and various sculpting tools to begin to create some beautiful Anglo-Saxon inspired grave markers. Check out our designs in progress!

Can we reverse freezing water?
To continue with our topic of States of Matter in Science, we conducted another experiment where we tested if crushed ice would melt due to adding another liquid, leaving it in a cold room or leaving it in a warm room. We had some lovely slushes as a result!

What happens to liquid when we freeze it?
Today, we decided to put a Science investigation to the test and see what would happen to a liquid if we froze it! We created either blackcurrant or orange diluted juice and poured them into ice lolly moulds. Then, we left them to freeze overnight and enjoyed a surprise treat the next day!

Anglo-Saxon prints
In our Art session today, we created some Anglo-Saxon inspired prints, using red paint, paper and card! We had so much fun creating our unique designs and are going to add more detail with metallic pens.

Can solids be liquids experiment
In our new Science topic of ‘States of Matter’, we investigated today whether solids can act as liquids! We used various materials to carry out our research and determined that although solids may act and appear to be liquids, they stay the same state!

Zumba with Gemma!
Gemma came into school today to do a special zumba workshop with us. We thoroughly enjoyed this new experience and even learned a few new dances moves.

Today, we celebrated our new Cornerstones topic of ‘Invasion’. To celebrate, we had various cuisines from different eras! We had food from the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking times! We enjoyed trying the new foods and encouraged each other to try new things.

In our Art lesson this week, we’ve been creating our own parts of the Bayeux Tapestry! We used threads, hessian and plastic needles to create the parts of the tapestry we wanted. Some of us discovered we have a hidden talent for stitching! We loved creating our pieces.

Career Encounter
Today, we were lucky enough to have Mrs Janet Morrison come to school to visit us! She used to work as a Metro train driver and spoke to us about her experiences, the training she had to go through to do this career and answered any questions we had. We even got to try her torch and work vest! A massive thank you to Janet for taking the time to speak to us today.

Topic Engagement with Adam Bushnell
To launch our new topic of 1066, we had the amazing author Adam Bushnell come in to deliver a history workshop with us! We learnt all about the origin of the name ‘Durham’, how the cathedral was built by the Normans and the heraldry alongside the weapons the Normans used! We had so much fun and can’t thank Adam enough for helping us bring this aspect of history to life.

Topic Celebration
To celebrate our latest topic of ‘Potions’, we have spent the afternoon creating our very own love potions in the form of chocolate love hearts! We created some delicious treats using a range of ingredients and can’t wait to share them with our families.

Rehearsing our Raps
In Music this half term, we have been looking at the genre of grime and have began to create our own verses for a song called ‘Stop!’, about stopping bullying in school. We’ve been working in groups to come up with our lyrics and worked hard today in practising staying on beat.

As part of our Remembrance service in school, Class 4 each decorated the giant poppy with donations for the British Legion.

Cornerstones Engagement
To kick off our new topic of ‘Misty Mountain Sierra’, we visited a local mountain – Penshaw Monument! We climbed to the top to look at both the physical and human geography around us, then got our sketchpads out to do some crayon rubbings and sketches of the monument. We had so much fun!

Cornerstones Celebration
We celebrated the end of our Cornerstones topic, ‘Road Trip USA’ by taking a virtual tour across America. We even stopped for some American style snacks! Gymnastic Sequences
Today in PE, we were working in our partners to come up with some ideas for our gymnastic sequences. We have been working hard with Mr Beveridge to remember to include a range of rolls, balances, jumps and turns!

Ukulele
We had another great session with Mr Stokoe today, where we focused on plucking the individual strings – so much so that we managed to pluck along to a couple of songs! Mr Stokoe was so impressed with our work and we are looking forward to learning more songs as the weeks progress.

Vertebrate and Invertebrate Investigation
In our Science lesson, we were looking today at vertebrates and invertebrates in our local area! We found lots of different examples of each on our school grounds and had so much fun working in our groups.

We had our first gymnastics session with Mr Beveridge today and we had so much fun! We worked in our partners to create imaginative balances and showed an excellent Rights Respecting ethos when showcasing our skills to our peers.

To kick off our new Cornerstones topic of ‘Road Trip USA’, we each became travel agents! We used the internet to research the must-see places to visit in New York and made our own travel brochures about the Big Apple. Then, we wrote postcards home to Mrs Lee to explain which sights we’d seen! We had so much fun and can’t wait to learn more about the United States of America.

Rehearsing our Raps
In Music this half term, we have been looking at the genre of grime and have began to create our own verses for a song called ‘Stop!’, about stopping bullying in school. We’ve been working in groups to come up with our lyrics and worked hard today in practising staying on beat.

To kick off our new topic of ‘Potions’, we created our very own potions in class! We mixed a range of ingredients together to create real life, colourful, bubbling potions! As part of our Remembrance service in school, Class 4 each decorated the giant poppy with donations for the British Legion.

Cornerstones Celebration
We celebrated the end of our Cornerstones topic, ‘Road Trip USA’ by taking a virtual tour across America. We even stopped for some American style snacks! We had another great session with Mr Stokoe today, where we focused on plucking the individual strings – so much so that we managed to pluck along to a couple of songs! Mr Stokoe was so impressed with our work and we are looking forward to learning more songs as the weeks progress.

TT Rockstar Day
Class 4 had so much fun dressing up as rockstars to celebrate TT Rockstar day. We did lots of TT Rockstars, answered some problem solving questions in our groups and then finished off the day with a fantastic disco. Everyone had a great time rocking! We had a very special visitor today in Class 4. Richard the History Bloke came in to work with us all morning to revisit our topic of mining in our local area. We learnt lots of information about how miners and their families lived in the early 1900s and even did some research on a local miner! We used our investigative skills to figure out what happened to Mr John Smiles and even found where he lived on the census. A massive thank you to Richard for coming to speak to us and for letting us look at real artefacts from the Victorian age! Performing poetry
Class 4 were so inspired by their visit from Paul Cookson that they decided to write their own Blue Abyss inspired poetry. They each created a poem in groups and performed it to the class – Miss Owens even played her guitar so the children could perform to the beat! Today, Class 4 visited the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth as our engagement for our Cornerstones topic of “Blue Abyss”. We loved learning lots of facts about sea creatures during our workshop at the aquarium – we even managed to touch some prehistoric shark artefacts! We had a lovely stroll around the aquarium, looking at all of the sea creatures and learning about their habitats and diets, before finishing our day watching the seal show (they even waved at us!) This week it is National Fieldwork week! To celebrate, Class 4 incorporated their fieldwork skills into their trip to Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth. We discussed the physical features of the geography around us and compared it to our surroundings in school. We definitely don’t have a beach or sea near Nettlesworth! Class 4 have loved the launch of their new reading space, Starbooks, this half term and have each began to fill up their own Starbooks loyalty cards! Every time a child reads at home with a parent or guardian they receive a star sticker – only 8 stickers to go until their card is full! (A full card means a dip in the prize box!) Today, Emilia brought in one of her dad’s very special coins – it is a golden commemorative coin to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. Now, in 2022, we were able to compare this commemorative coin with the coins we received from Mrs Lee and held it as a reminder to treasure our Platinum Jubilee coins. At the weekend, Jacob and his brother Lucas had the once in a lifetime opportunity to play football in St James Park – the home of Newcastle United! Skip into Spring
This week is Skipping Week and Class 4 have been practising and perfecting their skipping techniques! We watched lots of helpful videos in class to explain new moves and to recap the basics and had a fantastic time trying to see just how many jumps we could do in 1 minute. Jake and Freddie even managed to wow us by doing the Side Swing Cross! We are continuing our newfound skipping skills in both our PE lessons and our breaktimes. Well done to all of Class 4 for giving 100% effort in their skipping and for encouraging each other along the way.National Numeracy Day!
Wednesday 18th May is National Numeracy Day! We celebrated this day by joining a nationwide livestream to try and set a new world record for the most primary classes reciting a times table roll call. Class 4 managed to learn some new moves whilst chanting their times tables and even managed to help break the world record!A special visitor
Class 4 have been learning all about the history of our local area this half term in History. We had a very special visitor come into school today to answer any questions the children had about our school, our village and how life was for a child in 1950s Northern England. Mrs Doris Johnson has lived in Nettlesworth her whole life and attended this primary school when it was known as Nettlesworth Infants – she even sent her daughter and granddaughter (Miss Owens) to this school too! A massive well done to Class 4 who were each presented with a certificate for taking part in the Tennis Festival at Durham University Sports Centre. We even have a copy of the certificate hanging outside of our classroom to show off our new skills.Tennis Festival
UNCRC Article 31 – Every child has the right to relax, play and join in with a wide range of activities. Today, Class 4 were lucky enough to take part in a Tennis Festival at Durham University Sports Centre at Maiden Castle. The children were able to participate in a carousel of tennis activities where they practised their aiming, catching and teamwork; all of these skills will come in handy when we focus on tennis with Mr Beveridge in PE! Class 4 enjoyed acting out the 1066 battle in groups using their historical knowledge. They confidently brought the history to life with talented drama acting.
Using their DT plans and research on working drawbridges, Class 4 had lots of fun working in groups to create their own drawbridge models.

What a beautiful morning we have all experienced in welcoming our parents and careers to share our Easter Egg competition results. Every child designed and created their entry to be judged by 2 judges from each class; the children were able to explain to the whole assembly why they liked each winning design. Every child in the school received an egg – curtesy of our wonderful parent group. A Rights Respecting Gold ethos demonstrated by all – well done to everyone.Dance Festival

Memorable experience – 1066! History / ICT The year is 1066. Edward the Confessor is dying and he’s asked Harold Godwinson to take over the throne. But Harold’s claim is under threat from three powerful men: William Duke of Normandy; Harald Hardrada, the King of Norway; and Edgar the Atheling, King Edward’s nephew. Class 4 worked in teams to play Harold and his challengers. They found out who the challenges were, where they came from and what their claim to the throne was. Backed by a council of advisors (The Witan), each challenger and Harold presented their claim to the throne!

Spring disco 17.2.22 Class 4 danced happily and enjoyed party treats at the Spring disco. A well deserved celebration for working so hard this term, well done everyone and thank you to parents for all your continued support reading and doing homework.

UNCRC Article 31 – Every child has a right to join in with a range of activities In science we compared three different soils and shook them in jars full of water to compare how the different layers settled to see what soil contains. We found out that sand collected on the bottom and clay particles floated on the top.Homework 22.11.21
