Fairtrade Fortnight in Class 1

March 10, 2022 by admin

UNCRC Article 27 – Every child has the right to a good standard of living and governments must help to provide this.

Over the past 2 weeks we have been learning lots of new things linking to our UNCRC Rights Respecting work and Fairtrade Schools Award. Every year we celebrate Fairtrade fortnight and this year we have focused on ‘Pablo – the Super Banana’.

We have tracked his location right from the banana farm in Columbia to our supermarket shelves, closely looking at the bananas that make the farmers happy by treating them fairly; (Fairtrade bananas) and the bananas that make the farmers sad; by not giving the farmers, who do the hardest work, a fair price. The children were shocked that this meant the farmers and their families didn’t have the same UNCRC rights as they have here at Nettlesworth Primary School.

We have set a challenge for the next time we are shopping and will look out for the ‘Super Sticker’ on different products so that together we can make a difference to the wider community all around the world! This started on Thursday afternoon when we visited our in school Fairtade Shop – we had lots of fun picking the different products to take home ๐Ÿ™‚

Check out the links below to see what we have been working on – especially the super cool song that we have learned ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunflowers for Ukraine

March 10, 2022 by admin

This morning in assembly we talked about how we are thinking about the children in Ukraine. We discussed our UNCRC articles and rights that we all have as children. We decided that we would like to show the children in Ukraine that we are thinking about them during this difficult time. Each child planted a sunflower seeds that we are going to take care of in school. In the warmer months we will then plant them outside on our school field to watch them continue to grow.

UNCRC Article 1 – everyone under the age of 18 has all the rights in the Convention.

Maths Day 2022

March 10, 2022 by admin

Mr Graham and the staff organised us an exciting afternoon of activities to get our mathematician heads into. It was lots of fun and all of the school shared the afternoon with a different class teacher. We had so much fun taking part in a whole school Maths Day. Mr Beveridge even joined in the fun and helped deliver Active Maths with Mrs Morton and Miss Milburn.

  • Mrs Morton worked with the wonderful Class 5 and WOW! It was wonderful to see the progress the children had made in their maths learning journeys (a one close to her heart as her first class of EYFS children…..now in Year 6!) We used lots of variation when working on individual mental arithmetic calculations before heading into the hall for a carousel of Active Maths activities – we certainly put the children through their paces.

  • Mrs Aspinall visited Class 4 and was super impressed with the knowledge of the children….so impressed that Mrs Aspinall put her feet up and let the children do the teaching! Well done Class 4!

  • Miss Grimes worked alongside Class 2. They had lots of fun solving tricky addition and subtraction problems, Miss Grimes was blown away! After this, they enjoyed joining in maths games and puzzles to put their knowledge of maths to the test.

  • Miss Milburn and Mr Beveridge taught Class 3, who had so much with an active maths session! The children added their scores playing skittles, knocking down dominoes, bean bag hoop throwing and a hoop throwing number game! Everyone enjoyed adding up their scores to see who the winners were!

  • Mr Graham worked with the youngest children in the school. They used concrete objects to solve different numerical patterns…. their favourite being the addition with haribos!

March 9, 2022 by admin

Today we were very excited to learn about the Mammal Web that we are using as part of our Science work. Mr Straughan helped us attach the Mammal Cam to a tree in our little garden. We are hoping that the camera will catch videos of animals that living in or visit our school grounds. We cant wait to see what the Mammal Cam catches!
