Year 5 Reading Buddies

October 20, 2022 by admin

Today Mrs Aspinall and Mrs Burton’s phonics groups had a special treat. We got to read to the children in year 5. They listened carefully to our fabulous reading and asked us questions about the text. They were very impressed with our fluent reading and ability to use Fred in our head if we got a little stuck. Thank you Year 5.

Harvest Festival 2022

October 20, 2022 by admin

UNCRC Article 14: Children and young people are free to be of any or no religion.

We enjoyed our Harvest Festival this afternoon, led by Rev. Michael at our local Church.

We learned about the importance of Harvest, Harvest around as well as the importance of Harvest to the Christian Faith. The children shared of favourite Harvest songs, poems and readings as part of the service.

Many thanks to all those who have donated food, the Durham Food Bank. It was really great to see so many parents, carers and wider family supporting their children and the school.

Class 1’s Nurse Visit

October 20, 2022 by admin

As part of our first topic of the year, ‘Marvellous Me’ we had a visit from Nurse Louise who works in a big hospital in Newcastle. We listened as she told us how nurses help people all around the world and showed us how to use some of her important equipment. She needed help from a team of Doctors, Nurses and Healthcare Assistants and we stepped into the role very well! Using stethoscopes, checking blood pressure and even watching Nurse Louise do Retinal examinations (ophthalmoscopy).

Our favourite part was getting a bandage of our own when stepping into the role of poorly patients in the hospital waiting room! Thank you so much for a great morning Nurse Louise 🙂

Class 1 Celebrates Black History Month

October 17, 2022 by admin

UNCRC Article 2 (Non-Discrimination) & 30 (Children from minority or indigenous groups).

October is Black History Month in the UK, an event that has been celebrated nationwide for more than 30 years. The month was originally founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK over many generations. Now, Black History Month has expanded to include the history of not just African and Caribbean people but black people in general.

For more info: Black History Month 2021: What is it? – CBBC Newsround

Class 1 have celebrated Black History Month by reading the story of Elmer and talking about how Elmer didn’t feel that he wanted to be the same as the other elephants. We talked about how differences should be celebrated and how each and every one of us are special and important!

Spooky Science Club

October 14, 2022 by admin

This week we had a Halloween theme for our Science club experiment. We made spooky gloop using cornflour and water. We mixed the ingredients to make sure that the mixture resembled slime. We were fascinated with the material that looked like a liquid, felt like a sold but acted like a liquid. SPOOKY!
