Article of the Week
LGBT+ History Month
Hello,

LGBT+ History Month is all about promoting fairness, equality and diversity. It aims to give voice to LGBT+ experiences, celebrate achievements and highlight the challenges people still face today.

We’re looking at this topic through the lenses of Articles 2, 13 and 17. There are activities to help your learners reflect on their identity and think about how they can support others to feel safe and comfortable to be their true selves, whether that’s in your school, community or beyond.

The pack is also full of information about the experiences of LGBT+ community, in the past and today, as learning is an essential step to becoming a true ally.

Care Day 2023

January 13, 2023 by admin

Care Day, the world’s biggest celebration of children and young people with care experience, is happening on 18th February 2023 in County Durham.

Durham’s CICC and Investing in Children are inviting people to join us to celebrate the positive experiences and contributions of children and young people in care or with care experience.

It will be a chance to take part in some of the fantastic activities we have planned throughout the day, we want the people of Co Durham to listen to children and young people themselves, look beyond the surface, and to see that every care-experienced child and young person is an individual with their own unique story, ambitions, and dreams for the future.

Please sign up via the Eventbrite link in the attached flyer and come along and spend some time with some fantastic people and share ideas to make things even better for Co Durham’s care community.

Professor Brainstorm Visit

January 9, 2023 by admin

Professor Brainstorm

To help launch our topics this half term we had a visit from Professor Brainstorm. He taught us lots of new and interesting things about Science. We are well and truly convinced that Science is FUN!

Class 1

Class 1 explored the magic of Science and they were AMAZED by all of the things Professor Brainstorm showed and explained to us. We learned how to make a laughing chicken from noise vibrations, how to create a circuit and light up Zog’s nose, how Liquid can turn to a gas that is really cold (liquid nitrogen) and pop the lid off a pringles tube before evaporating and how to make a squid float and sink inside of  a plastic bottle!

Class 2 & 3

Today we had lots of fun learning all about fantastic forces with Professor Brainstorm. We enjoyed spinning water upside down as well as shooting potato out of a tube! Unfortunately, we couldn’t defy gravity … but we did try!

Class 4

Professor Brainstorm wowed us with some fantastic science experiments, made from equipment we could use at home or school! We investigated lots of ways to make sound and light and even discussed what instruments make higher or lower pitched sounds – linking to our Cornerstones topic of ‘I Am Warrior’, we even thought of instruments the Romans would’ve used! Everyone had so much fun.

Class 5

UNCRC Article 28 – right to education

A fabulous afternoon we have all had when we welcomed Professor Brainstorm into school and participated in a science workshop. We had fun watching electrical explosions, freezing flowers with liquid nitrogen and the famous ‘spud gun’!

Rights Respecting Gold ethos demonstrated by all our children; well done everyone.

UNCRC Articles 2, 9 and 37 Holocaust Memorial Day

January 5, 2023 by admin

The 27 January is Holocaust Memorial Day, the day that the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated in 1945. On this day we remember the six million Jewish people who were killed during the Holocaust, alongside millions of other people, including children, who were killed under Nazi persecution and in genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

We are linking four articles to activities this week. Article 2, non-discrimination, Article 19, protection from violence, abuse and neglect, Article 37, children in detention, and Article 38, protection from war.
