Parent Governor Vacancy

June 7, 2021 by admin

Monday 7th June 2021

Dear Parent/Carer,

 Parent Governor Vacancy

I am writing to let you know that we have one vacancy for parents on the Governing Body of Nettlesworth Primary School and to explain in a little more detail about what the role involves.

The Role of Governors

Everyone says that the role of governors is increasingly important, especially with the increasing independence of schools as well as the increased scrutiny and accountability of schools and school leaders.

As Governors we are not there to manage the day-to-day running of the school – that is the job of the Principal. We are there to do three main things:

(1) To help set the vision and strategic direction of school;

(2) To hold the Principal to account for the school’s performance;

(3) To monitor the curriculum provision and teaching and learning in school .

Another common way of putting the role of governors is to say that our job is to provide a healthy mix of support and challenge.

The skills and qualities needed by Governors

Recent Government guidance on appointing and electing governors says:

‘All governors need a strong commitment to their role and to improving outcomes for children; the inquisitiveness to question and analyse; and the willingness to learn. They need good inter-personal skills, appropriate levels of literacy in English and sufficient numeracy skills to understand basic data.’

We have a range of backgrounds including: school and higher education, civil service, finance, and human resources.

Time Commitment

We meet as a full governing body once a term, ie three times per year. The meetings run at school.  In addition to the meetings, we require governors to come in to school, usually in the school day over the course of the year. These visits usually focus on an aspect of school development. We try to attend various school events and may be called upon for other tasks such as: sitting on senior appointments panels or giving particular attention to a specific issue or policy. As well as these activities there is quite a bit to read and most importantly there is an expectation that Governors will attend training sessions in order to ensure that they are up to date on such things as: school performance data; finance; special educational needs; keeping children safe at schools etc. A comprehensive induction programme is provided.

A term of office is for four years.

Eligibility

Anyone who has a child on the roll of the school at the time of the election is eligible to stand (and you do not have to resign if your child leaves during your term of office).

If you are still interested after reading all the above, I would encourage you to consider putting yourself forward as a candidate. If you would like to speak with me about the role I can also be contacted via the school office.   .

If you do wish to put yourself forward then you need to complete a nomination form, which can be collected from school or delivered.

Election Process

If there are more than two candidates an election will be held and this will take place.  More details will follow on this.

I hope this is helpful in helping you decide whether or not you wish to stand as a Parent Governor in order to play your part in helping Nettlesworth Primary not only to retain its very high standards but to be part of the school’s development.

If you are interested in this vacancy, please can you let us know by Friday 11th June 2021.

Yours sincerely,

Donna Lee

Eat them to Defeat them

June 7, 2021 by admin

Our school is supporting the Eat Them to Defeat Them campaign to encourage kids to eat more vegetables. It’s award-winning and proven to make eating vegetables more fun. The campaign has been created by Veg Power in partnership with ITV, Channel 4 and Sky and is well-supported by celebrities and chefs.

The ‘Eat Them to Defeat Them’ campaign is aiming to change that and we are getting involved. This week we have launched the idea in assembly and sent home packs all about it. The idea is that there is a different vegetable each week and we ask children to try and eat them 3 times. If they do they can put the sticker on their own personal poster/sheet – they are all in the packs sent out.
Please look out for the reward charts and sticker packs in school bags and send them back in to be in with a chance of winning a prize when it’s FULL FULL FULL!

More details can be found in your packs but also at vegpower.org.uk/

Or watch the advert promoting the campaign at Eat Them to Defeat Them

Adam Bushnell Literacy WOW Day

May 28, 2021 by admin

Today, every child in the school had the opportunity to work with the amazing author; Adam Bushnell!

In class 1 we used beautiful descriptive language and had to trap the troll family outdoors in our enchanted woodland. Lots of imagination was used by the children and the creativity was FABULOUS!

In Class 2 we learnt all about the Great Fire of London. We were amazed by all of the facts we found out and are now super excited to learn more. We listened to stories, watched videos and were even able to smell things from that period of time. What a fantastic time we had!

In Class 3, we created our own superhero characters ready for our Heroes and Villains new topic. We found out that knights heraldic colours all had different meanings. We learnt all about lots of different weapons and got to hold them!

In Class 4, we created a spooky narrative based on our new Cornerstones Curriculum – Firedamp and Davy Lamps. The children thoroughly enjoyed their Memorable Experience with Adam Bushnell.

Reading Rainbows!

May 21, 2021 by admin

We are so proud of our little rainbows across the school – so many of you are reading at home and it is a GREAT achievement! Keep up this excellent work, it is really paying off.

Mrs Morton, in class 1 had 85% of her little rainbows read at home with a parents this week – we have also been enjoying quite ‘Love to Read time’ where we all choose one of our favourite books from the class library and look through the pictures, spot our phonics sounds and begin to read simple sentences.

Class 2 had 44% reading with a parent last week but this week they have blown our socks off with their new reading tree display to encourage at home reading – its increased to a massive 77%! Each time a child reads with a parents and logs it in their reading record they get a leaf for their reading tree…. it is in full bloom already 🙂

Class 3 had 60% reading at home with parents and Class 4 had 58% – Many more of our Key Stage children were reading at home independently too, but remember to keep signing planners and reading logs parents 🙂

Why is reading so important?

  • Reading for pleasure

There is overwhelming evidence that literacy has a significant relationship to people’s life chances. Reading for pleasure is more important than either wealth or social class as an indicator of success at school.

  • What does reading do for our children?

Reading improves concentration – Children have to sit still and quietly so they can focus on the story when they’re reading. Reading also relaxes the body and calms the mind whilst also exercising the connections in the brain.

It teaches children about the world around them – Through reading, they learn about people, places and events outside their own experience.

Reading improves a child’s vocabulary, leads to more highly-developed language skills and improves the child’s ability to write well. Children learn new words as they read as well as seeing how to structure sentences and how to use language effectively.

Reading develops a child’s imagination – When we read we translate the descriptions of people, places and things into pictures.

It also helps children develop empathy – When we’re engaged in a story, we imagine how the characters are feeling and use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation.
